Jurgen Klopp told perfect Mohamed Salah replacement at West Ham when Liverpool complete transfer

Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman says West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen would be a good signing for the Reds if they lose Mohamed Salah in 2024.

The Egyptian winger was the subject of intense transfer interest from the Saudi Pro League this summer but stayed put at Anfield where he has started the season with four goals and four assists in eight games.

The Saudis are expected to return for Salah again next year, at which point the forward will be 32 and in the final year of his Liverpool contract. Should he depart, the Reds could well turn to Bowen, who has already been linked with a move to Jurgen Klopp’s side in previous transfer windows.

The 26-year-old England international scored his fourth Premier League goal of the season during West Ham’s away defeat against the Reds on Sunday, with Bowen expertly heading past Alisson Becker to level the game at 1-1 following Salah’s opener from the penalty spot in the first half.

Asked by Betfred whether he believes Bowen could move to Liverpool and develop under Klopp if Salah leaves, McManaman, who played more than 350 times for the Reds during the 1990s, said: “I don’t see why not. He looked very dangerous against Liverpool on Sunday and he’s shown in the last couple of years what a good player he is.

“He caused Liverpool many problems but you don’t know whether they’d like to sign a bigger name if they lose Salah and when you consider the money they’d receive for Mo.

“However, I do believe that Jarrod Bowen could easily fit in at Liverpool because he’s a hard worker, he can play on the right or down the middle and he’s very dangerous.

“It goes without saying that it will be very difficult for Liverpool to replace Mohamed Salah considering all he’s done for the club, but Jarrod Bowen could easily fit into their side and we will see if Jürgen can work his magic and develop Jarrod even more.”

West Ham would not want to lose Bowen next summer and have been trying to tie the winger down to a new contract at the London Stadium for the best part of a year. Bowen’s current West Ham deal runs until 2025.
