Tottenham set to complete first January signing with Timo Werner
RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner edges closer to joining the north Londoners
Tottenham Hotspurs’ are close to completing the short-term loan signing of RB Leipzig and Germany striker Timo Werner, football.london understands.
The 27-year-old is set to join Spurs until the end of the season to bolster Ange Posteceglou’s options in attack for the second half of the season. Werner is expected to fly to London in the next 24 hours to complete his return to the premier League.
Werner will become Spurs’ first signing of the January transfer window. football.london understands that there will be an option to make the switch permanent at the end of the season, with the fee being no more than £15.5million.
Reports have indicated that the north Londoners will cover the striker’s full wages for the rest of the campaign. Werner will arrive in the capital with a point to prove to the Premier League after his underwhelming spell with Chelsea.
The German scored 23 goals in 89 appearances for the Blues after moving for £45million from RB Leipzig in 2020. He returned to the Bundesliga outfit, but has managed only 22 goal involvements in 40 matches.
With Son Heung-min unavailable for selection for the next few weeks due to the Asian Cup, Werner’s arrival comes at the perfect time for Tottenham. The north Londoners were far from their best in the final third against Burnley in the FA Cup on Friday, with only Pedro Porro’s wonderstrike saving them from a replay.
